Zirconium silicate, with the chemical formula ZrSiO4, is a naturally occurring silicate mineral known for its gemstone quality crystals called cubic zircons, which resemble diamond gemstones. It is colorless in its pure form, but the presence of impurities can result in various colors such as red, brown, yellow, or green. The red gem-quality zircon is sometimes referred to as jacinth, while those with other colors are called jargoons. There is also a naturally occurring colorless variety, and colorless varieties can be produced through heat treatment. Zirconium silicate exhibits a tetragonal crystal structure, has a density of 4.56 g/cm3, and a hardness of 7.5 Mohs. It dissociates to ZrO2 and SiO2 above 1,540°C and melts at 2,550°C. It is insoluble in water, acids, aqua regia, and alkalies, making it inert in most chemicals.
